ISRAEL. PALESTINE. The greater beyond

Netanyahu’s revanchism signals weakness, not strength.

Arab states slammed Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday, after he told a news program he was "very attached" to a "vision of Greater Israel", seen to include parts of Egypt and Jordan. South Sudan denied it was in talks to resettle Palestinians.

INTELLIGENCE. Netanyahu's remarks, in Hebrew, have been translated several ways. There are also several interpretations of what “Greater Israel” means, and what he meant by "vision". It's likely to be dog-whistling to his base, but the fact he said it at all indicates how reliant he is on far-right support, even to the detriment of ties with Jordan and Egypt, which have been quietly supportive even as Israel's erstwhile allies in the West turn their backs.

FOR BUSINESS. Israel's enemies have long claimed it seeks to control the lands promised in Genesis: "from the brook of Egypt to the Euphrates". And now Israel is the region's strongest military power, Netanyahu's remarks have been seized on. Yet barely able to manage Gaza, where 123 were reportedly killed Wednesday, any further advances would be intolerable. Turkey, Iran and Russia have nonetheless offered their services to Syria and Lebanon, just in case.
