Andrew, the ex-Duke of York, was briefly arrested Thursday on allegations he sent official documents to Jeffrey Epstein. New Mexico reopened an investigation into Epstein’s ranch. Donald Trump said the US would release its “UFO records”.
INTELLIGENCE. The UK is in political crisis over Epstein, but its institutions are doing their job. The US Department of Justice, while finding time to hang an enormous banner of Trump on its headquarters, has failed to prosecute anyone. Trump’s efforts to distract, now seemingly involving aliens, look increasingly desperate. Civil and state suits, meanwhile, risk uncovering more evidence. Epstein’s estate agreed Thursday to a new $35 million victim settlement.
FOR BUSINESS. Trump claims to be exonerated by the files. He will also point to a decision by Palm Beach, Epstein’s former home, to name its airport after him. Yet the walls are closing in. The scandal has caused Tom Pritzker to leave Hyatt, Bill Gates to avoid conferences, and Peter Mandelson to wind up his company. The UN has put out a statement alleging “crimes against humanity”. Even Hillary Clinton, whose own husband is implicated, wants the files released.
