CHINA. RUSSIA. Reign on parade

Xi and Putin revel in a personalist world order.

Beijing marked the 80th anniversary of the Second World War with a parade showcasing new missiles, autonomous sea drones, directed-energy weapons and robot dogs. Russia and China signed off on the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline project.

INTELLIGENCE. Most of the weapons weren't new, but that wasn't the point. The large number of foreign leaders was, with Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un taking pride of place. World War II is seen by in the US and Europe as the triumph of democracy over fascism. In today's parade, Xi Jinping changed the narrative to the triumph of strong men. Inviting sanctioned autocrats was less a show of new alliances than an end to Western ideological supremacy.

FOR BUSINESS. Agreeing to the $25 billion PS2 project, which could double Russia’s gas exports to China to 94 billion cubic metres per year, was another form of reordering, though Gazprom shares fell 3% due to questions over the long-delayed agreement’s enforceability (it was described as an MoU, not a contract). Still, the deal could upend US hopes to export LNG to China, not to mention any future European desire to turn the taps back on after Ukraine.
